Real Examples of Youth Driving Change
For young people, a public transit pass opens more than just the doors on a bus: it opens the doors to opportunity.
With transit access, youth can reach jobs, extracurriculars, volunteer activities, and new corners of their communities. But taking the bus for the first time can feel complicated and intimidating, especially for those with little experience.
The Ride Guide was created to help trainers make that first ride easier and more empowering for youth.
Based on years of successful Transit Training Sessions first developed in Kingston, Ontario, this practical guide helps trainers plan and deliver short, engaging sessions that teach youth how to use public transit safely, confidently, and independently.
Free transit passes are powerful, but they work best when paired with training that builds the skills and confidence to use them. Ultimately, it helps communities unlock the benefits of free transit for youth, growing a new generation of responsible, enthusiastic transit riders.

Celebrate Community Wins With Us!
Communities across Canada are doing remarkable work at the intersection of youth engagement and transit. Get on the Bus is proud to celebrate these wins and shine a light on the people and projects helping young riders build confidence, independence, and connection within their communities. Through a growing collection of case studies, our goal is to interview leaders, document what works, and compile best practices that other transit advocates can learn from and adapt.
As part of this effort, the Get on the Bus Youth Engagement Best Practice "seal of approval" will be featured throughout our resources. This icon signals that an initiative has been thoughtfully documented and contributes to a shared national learning process. If your community is doing impactful work engaging youth around transit, we want to hear from you. Please reach out if you would like to be profiled or have an engagement technique, pilot, or project that others could learn from. By sharing your story, you help build a stronger network of communities committed to empowering youth through accessible, welcoming, and innovative transit experiences.
